Concrete & Bourbon: On Common Ground

IMG_7662.jpg

Every sip has a story to tell…

It’s hard for us not to find all kinds of parallels between concrete and other things we love because well, we’re just that obsessed with what we do!

A Master’s Touch

You may have noticed from some of our blog features that we really love a good craft cocktail, and we especially love bourbon. You might be wondering why the people at a concrete countertop business are so enamored by something like bourbon. Well, we love good bourbon for the same reasons we love concrete: it’s art. It’s a living, breathing expression of commitment and care. Good bourbon takes a master’s touch. It requires a dedicated, highly trained distiller to get the mash bill right (A mash bill is the mix of grains used to make bourbon for all you non-nerds). It takes the right wood to store it, and the right conditions to age it in. But just like concrete, nature has her way with the outcome. Environmental conditions and even the slightest variations make every bourbon batch unique. Weller Special Reserve and Pappy Van Winkle share a Mash bill, use the same barrels, and are aged on the same property, but Weller isn’t Pappy.

A Narrative You Can Drink

We’re so passionate about concrete because we love stories. We believe each piece of concrete has a story to tell. Good bourbon also carries a narrative. Each batch of bourbon is unique, and that’s a good thing. Distilleries work hard to prepare each batch with the same parameters and attention to detail, but there are factors outside of their control that leave a unique fingerprint on each batch. Concrete operates similarly. We plan and measure and carefully execute, but each piece comes out with its own personality. No two pieces are exactly alike. It’s what makes this art form so appealing; it’s alive with all its possibilities.

What’s In Our Glass?

Special Edition 2013 Angel’s Envy Cask strength.

Why we love it:

-For starters, only 4000 were made and who doesn’t love exclusive things?

-It’s finished in port barrels so it has a sweet twinge to it that you don’t often find with bourbon

-It was made by master distiller Lincoln Henderson before he died in 2013, making it the final project he worked on.

-It’s delicious ;)

It may seem like a stretch to find so many commonalities with the things we love and our work with concrete but we can’t help it! It’s an art form that was so easy to fall in love with, and the process is still so fascinating to us! Even if you don’t have concrete on the brain 24/7 like we do, we still think you’d enjoy a nice glass of bourbon. And hey, maybe it's a good reminder that try as we might we never actually have total control, and sometimes the things that are out of our hands are some of the things that end up being the most beautiful (or maybe we just get sentimental about concrete and a delicious drink, we'll let you decide).
