How To Style Your Mantel Like A Designer

Lucky for us the interior design queen herself, Joanna Gaines, has a handy guide to help you style your mantel like a pro!

Here’s how to use Joanna’s tried and true method:

  1. Anchor: for this you could use a mirror as shown above or any larger piece of artwork to start with.

  2. Height. You can add height with candles, decorative vases, stacked books, a lamp, or some other taller object to give your mantel an interesting and balanced look.

  3. Layering. According to Joanna, if your focal piece or anchor is too overpowering, you can add smaller framed photos or pieces of artwork in front of it to add some dimension.

  4. Organic shapes. Like a plant, or your cat!

  5. Asymmetry. If you’re looking to achieve a more eclectic style, Joanna suggests displaying items in odd numbers and different sizes, and throwing some antique things into the mix!

For this mantel:

  • a mirror is used to anchor

  • smaller framed art to add some layers

  • candle sticks for height

  • and a small print in an organic frame for some depth and character.

Since we’re staring down the holidays, here’s an example of how to apply Joanna’s method with your fall or Christmas decor!

  • The large framed print is used as the anchor

  • The antique snowboard adds height and character

The mini tree is used to layer

  • the antique washboard on the left provides some asymmetry

  • The mini tree on the left incorporates organic materials into the mix

  • and the little white vases add some height as well

Alright Joanna, I think it’s starting to click!
