Solar Sculpture Install!

The unveiling of the solar sculpture we worked on!

We’ve been working on this project for a while and it felt amazing to get the install and unveiling in the books! We got the chance to create a sculpture base for the Exploria Stadium with J Costa Group. It has been an incredible project to work on.

The finished sculpture features solar panels that tie back into the electrical grid and feed power back into the grid for OUC in order to offset the electricity the sculpture uses for nighttime lighting! The result is an incredible sculpture with a carbon output of net zero.

Rough Hewn Bathroom Vanity

We created a new concrete texture just for this special vanity!

We created a new concrete texture and finish just for this piece!

A client came to us wanting essentially a simulation of a huge piece of rough hewn stone as a bathroom vanity. It took a lot of time to figure out how to do this in a way that wouldn’t look contrived, but wouldn’t look hand made either. After some tests, we came up with a sample we were excited about! The photo on the left is a photo of rough hewn stone for reference, and on the right is our concrete texture sample.

After we figured out how to create the mold that would give us the effect we were looking for, it was time to cast the piece!

We loved the texture!! Our client was excited so it was time to seal up the vanity.

All sealed up! We were thrilled to work on this piece and happy than we can add rough-hewn concrete textures to our repertoire.

6 ways to use Concrete in the Home

6 of our favorite ways to use concrete in the home

Our Favorite Uses for Concrete in the Home

We’ve started to see concrete gaining a lot of ground in the design industry over the past few years. Concrete used to be reserved for basements and workshops, but now It’s not unusual to see a concrete countertop on your favorite home makeover show! There are a ton of amazing ways to use concrete to add texture and depth to your designs. Here are our top 6 favorite ways to incorporate concrete in the home!

1. Fireplace Surround

Fireplace surrounds are an incredible place to incorporate some natural stone into your home. Concrete can take your fireplace from being just a fireplace to the focal point of the room.

2. Kitchen Countertops & Islands

The kitchen is one of the best places to incorporate concrete into your home! Concrete countertops are durable, and they don’t stain or scratch easily making them the perfect material for even the most avid cookers and spillers. We all have likely experienced the horror of the wine ring that instantly ruins those Formica countertops or that little slip of the knife that leaves a forever scratch on your favorite marble top. Concrete gives you design versatility with that durable surface that makes your kitchen space more functional than ever. You shouldn’t be afraid to mess up your countertops, your countertops should be built for the life you live.

3. bathroom sinks and vanities!

Bathrooms are often overlooked when it comes to your average home design. We tend to thing of them as just necessity rooms, until that space is elevated and it becomes not just the place we quickly brush our teeth, but a relaxing space we actually enjoy. The vanity can play a huge role here. If you change the look of the sink, you make a huge impact on the rest of the space! Here are a few bathrooms we think are totally getting it right.

4. Furniture

Concrete is awesome for built in home elements, but it’s also great for adding in a bold statement piece. Using bold colors or interesting shapes, concrete can add an unexpected element to your space.

5. Floors

Even though we don’t take on too many concrete floor projects anymore, we can still appreciate what they bring to a space! it’s a clean, modern, industrial look that (let’s be honest) hides dirt reallyyyy well. We’re not saying your floors are dirty but if the floor allows you to skip a day or two of mopping, we are all for it!

6. Bathtubs!

Of course we are all about a concrete tub! Concrete tubs provide an elevated look, and are super comfy to settle in and have a nice long soak. They’re durable, easy to clean, and very luxurious!

How To Style Your Mantel Like A Designer

How to style your mantel like an interior designer

Lucky for us the interior design queen herself, Joanna Gaines, has a handy guide to help you style your mantel like a pro!

photo via Magnolia.com

photo via Magnolia.com

Here’s how to use Joanna’s tried and true method:

  1. Anchor: for this you could use a mirror as shown above or any larger piece of artwork to start with.

  2. Height. You can add height with candles, decorative vases, stacked books, a lamp, or some other taller object to give your mantel an interesting and balanced look.

  3. Layering. According to Joanna, if your focal piece or anchor is too overpowering, you can add smaller framed photos or pieces of artwork in front of it to add some dimension.

  4. Organic shapes. Like a plant, or your cat!

  5. Asymmetry. If you’re looking to achieve a more eclectic style, Joanna suggests displaying items in odd numbers and different sizes, and throwing some antique things into the mix!

E406F480-FE70-417F-9EA4-4F19D5A96206.JPG

For this mantel:

  • a mirror is used to anchor

  • smaller framed art to add some layers

  • candle sticks for height

  • and a small print in an organic frame for some depth and character.

6C88F161-AAEC-42AF-B5FB-EC392B5DE6D2.JPG

Since we’re staring down the holidays, here’s an example of how to apply Joanna’s method with your fall or Christmas decor!

  • The large framed print is used as the anchor

  • The antique snowboard adds height and character

The mini tree is used to layer

  • the antique washboard on the left provides some asymmetry

  • The mini tree on the left incorporates organic materials into the mix

  • and the little white vases add some height as well

Alright Joanna, I think it’s starting to click!

Unique display design for a treasured collection

Designing a display case for a fossilized tortoise shell was a unique opportunity to explore!

Original display for a fossilized tortoise shell

We have a lot of irons in the fire here at Price Concrete, and one of those irons is our Black Label, Lawson Design. Through Lawson Design, we create totally custom, exclusive, luxury pieces for discerning clientele. This is where we have total creative freedom to create functional art pieces for clients who want something a little different. Lawson Design was commissioned to create a beautiful display case for a fossilized tortoise shell.

IMG_1823 2.JPG

It all started with a concept rendering! We sent it on to our client, and they approved. It was time to move on to the actual creation.

IMG_5496.JPG
ACS_0114 2.JPG

After casting the base, and sealing it up, we needed to work on the electrical aspect of the piece.

ACS_0121 2.JPG

The display case was to have changing led lights on the top portion, and lights on the bottom to create the floating effect. After we got the lights all wired up, we had the piece fitted for the glass top, and began working on the finishing touches!

ACS_0129.JPG
ACS_0128.JPG
ACS_0123.JPG

We got the piece all finished up and installed, and we love how it looks in our client’s home! It was incredible to have the freedom to create a completely original design for this unique and special item.

Details

  • Completely custom original design

  • App enabled up and down LED lighting

  • Metallic gold finish on the bottom portion

  • 3/8” thick display glass

  • Recess lined with black velvet

  • One perfectly displayed fossilized tortoise shell!

Spiced Cider & Fig Cocktail

Delicous autumn inspired drink recipe inside!

It’s easy to get into a rut with cocktails. You have a few easy to make favorites and so you don’t really mix it up that much (bad pun, we know). That’s why we’ve got your next recipe all ready for you! We’ve done the digging for you, and found a delicious spiced cider and fig cocktail (yum!) all you have to do it mix and enjoy.

By now you probably know we are very much bourbon folks, but we like to branch out a little before settling back into old habits. This recipe calls for gin and dry cider, and it was definitely worth leaving our comfort zone for.

B2BC7E03-3CC0-4C5E-9F17-B0FF79195ECD.JPG

Ingredients

Dry

1 Fig, slices

3 Mission black figs, large

6 Thyme, sprigs

1/2 oz Lime juice, freshly squeezed

1/2 oz Thyme simple syrup

1/2 cup Granulated sugar

Liquids

1 Club soda

1 oz Gin

2 oz Hard cider, dry

1/2 cup Water

The Recipe

Step One: Thyme Simple Syrup: In a small pot, heat sugar and water to a boil, stirring frequently. Reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add thyme sprigs. Let steep for 5 minutes. Remove sprigs and strain the syrup to remove any loose leaves. Chill until completely cooled and ready to use.

Step Two: In a cocktail shaker, muddle together the gin, lime juice, thyme simple syrup, and figs. Make sure to smash the figs up really well!

Step three: Strain into a glass over ice. Gently stir cider into the glass. Top with a splash of club soda.

Step Four: Garnish with a couple fresh fig slices and a small sprig of fresh thyme. Serve immediately.

The Sunken Living Room Is Making A Come Back

The conversation pits from the 70’s are back and better than ever!

The “conversation pits” from the 70’s are on the rise! (excuse our pun)

27T.003C.jpg
3be5fa9257de176349db29b9f6a9e8f9.jpg

Remember when you were younger and you’d put on your brand new flare jeans and feel like you invented style, only to have your mom point out that she “used to have a pair exactly like that”? Then she would point out a myriad of trendy things that originated from her hay-day and you’d roll your eyes and she told you that style is cyclical, and eventually it all comes back around and that “maybe one day your daughter will be rolling her eyes at you for saying the same thing and then you’ll understand. Well, as per usual, mom was right. Trends are cyclical and it’s better when you don’t fight it.

If you’re anything like me, you couldn’t peel your eyes away from Selling Sunset. The drama, the houses, the bad acting as the girls tried to generate even more drama, it all made for pretty enticing tv. There was an episode on Selling Sunset where they proudly boasted that the house has a sunken living room from the original construction (photo below). On the show they couldn’t share whose house it was they were selling, but I later found out it was Orlando Bloom! And if Orlando Bloom thinks it’s cool to have a’s cool to have a sunken living room, then by golly, so do we!

So, without further ado, here are five houses with “conversation pits'“ that make us want to demolish our living rooms and build one ourselves.

5 Tips For Styling Your Coffee Table

How to style your coffee table like an interior designer

  1. use a decorative tray

EA7427E1-8A39-4F82-B325-8109D8F01251.JPG

Decorative trays are so much more useful than they’re given credit for. They help break up the surface space and provide a focal point for your coffee table. Trays make grouping elements together easy, and they add a sense of intentionality to the design. Things aren’t just plopped down on the table. They’re carefully curated and placed into this fancy tray! Look at you!

2. Incorporate plants or fresh cut flowers

D2FD4438-1B6F-4F31-AB15-2A9C2083B3F9 2.JPG

Plants are basically the design equivalent of salt. Put em on anything, and they make it better. You can use taller fresh cut flowers to add some height to the space, or a smaller succulent to minimize the upkeep. You really can’t go wrong with plants.

3. add books to create levels and groupings

B33E44AE-1140-45F2-8A9F-5D9BF01AEDAC.JPG

Books and coffee tables go together, like mornings and coffee! Pretty sure coffee tables were invented for books (don’t quote us on that). Stacking a few books on your coffee table and setting a candle or other small items on them makes a nice grouping and visually breaks up your coffee table.

4. add an unexpected element

94A44C84-D248-4009-B385-17A8697D36C9.JPG
69611FA2-11AD-48E3-93E2-538E8553C6DC.JPG

In this case, they added a wooden bead garland to the coffee table, but you can explore your creativity here and go wild! Add a unique figurine, or a sentimental item, or whatever your heart desires. The world is your oyster, and the coffee table is your playground! Go nuts.

5. when in doubt, keep it simple!

930124EE-D66F-4179-BEFB-B78D49DF43AC.JPG

You don’t need to have a ton of stuff on your coffee table for it to look styled and intentional. Sometimes one or two well-placed items will do the trick! Editing is so important in design, and sometimes the solution to your design woes is less, not more. If the coffee table doesn’t look quite right or how you imagined, first try taking something away. Embrace the negative space, and enjoy your chic new decor.

What’s your favorite thing to add to your coffee table?

6 Awesome Concrete Fire Features To Keep You Warm This Fall!

Well, it’s almost October! We really can’t believe it either. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of October is close friends gathered around a nice fire laughing and having a drink. There’s flannel, there’s warmth, maybe someone is gently strumming a guitar (or loudly butchering a cover of ‘Country Road Take Me Home.” Even though we may not get all of the big fall festivals or costume parties this year, small gatherings around the fire are definitely a go!
